PAI Rods

What is Torlon PI Rods?

Torlon PAI rods is the most commonly used extrusion material among PAI plastics. Made from PAI resin, it is produced through extrusion, thermoforming, and injection molding. PAI, short for Polyamide-Imide, is a polymer containing both amide and imide groups in its main chain. Its molecular structure features a regular alternating pattern of imide rings and amide bonds. It combines the advantages of polyamide and polyimide, retaining the toughness of polyamide while possessing the heat resistance of polyimide. It is a combination of polyimide, which boasts excellent heat resistance and mechanical strength, and polyamide, which offers good processability and toughness. It is widely used in aerospace, automotive, electronics, and industrial applications.

The model of Torlon PAI rods?

Base grades of PAI plastic offer the best mechanical properties. The addition of PTFE, graphite, carbon fiber, or glass fiber can significantly enhance the specific properties of PAI, expanding its application range. Commonly used grades include the following.

1. Basic Grade: Yellowish-brown in color, with a specific gravity of 1.42 g/cm³. It boasts superior impact strength compared to all other grades, along with high ductility, high-temperature resistance, low friction, and excellent electrical properties. It is ideal for structural components such as connecting rods and sealing rings in aerospace applications. Commonly used grade: Torlon 4203 rods.

2. PTFE and Graphite Reinforced Grade: Military green in color, with a specific gravity of 1.46 g/cm³. This formulation contains 15% PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) and 5% graphite. Graphite's layered structure allows for slip during friction, significantly reducing the material's coefficient of friction. When used synergistically with PTFE, graphite forms a low-friction interface, enhancing lubricity and improving wear resistance. Graphite's high thermal conductivity also helps dissipate heat within the PAI composite, slowing performance degradation at high temperatures and improving thermal stability. The wire grade used is Torlon 4301 rods.

3. Glass fiber reinforced grades: Dark green in color, with a specific gravity of 1.61 g/cm³. Filled with 30% glass fiber, they offer enhanced mechanical strength and heat resistance, outstanding dimensional stability at high temperatures, and high creep resistance. They are suitable for applications such as lubricated bearings and seals. Common grades include Torlon 5530 rods or 5030 Torlon rods.

  • Torlon rods is a kind of PAI plastic profile. PAI stands for polyamide imide, an amorphous material with a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 537 °F (280 °C). It can handle continuous high-temperature and high-pressure environments up to 260 °C (500 °F) with no problem, making it a seriously tough and melt-processable plastic. Its heat resistance is especially impressive.PAI has a really low thermal expansion rate and excellent creep resistance, so it stays dimensionally stable in all kinds of conditions. Parts made from it also offer great compressive and impact strength. You’ll often find it used in things like electrical connectors, bearing cages, spindles, chip-test sockets, and labyrinth seals.
