Durable Vespel SP-1 parts from Ideal Plastic can work reliably from -196°C all the way up to 288°C in air. Throughout this range, it keeps great wear resistance and insulation—and it can even handle short bursts of temperature up to 480°C. In Vespel’s SP series, GG123 matches their SP-1 grade, which offers the highest elongation and purity. Thanks to these qualities, it’s often chosen for making parts used in high-temperature settings, like insulation components, valve seats, thrust bearings, separation claws, and so on.
It’s part of the high-performance engineering plastics family. It’s typically created from raw materials like dianhydride and diamine through a condensation reaction, and its molecular structure contains repeating imide rings. The standout features of this material are its incredible heat resistance, strong mechanical properties, and excellent insulation. Over the years, polyimide has found more and more uses in fields like electronics, aerospace, and new energy.
The DuPont™ Vespel® SP-1 parts we supply are usually hot-pressed first, then finished by CNC machining or laser cutting. Why? Well, it comes down to the nature of polyimide: most PI plastics are thermosetting, meaning once they’re cured, they can’t be reshaped. Also, after curing, the material becomes quite hard and less flexible. If you try to cut it directly, it tends to crack, create burrs, and wear down cutting tools—which hurts the final precision of the part. Laser cutting, on the other hand, is precise, fast, and has very little thermal impact. That makes it a great fit for producing 3 parts where accuracy really matters.

PI plastic is incredibly heat resistant. Even after long-term use, its performance doesn't easily degrade in extreme temperatures—from as low as minus 200 degrees Celsius all the way up to over 300 degrees Celsius. That’s why PI has become such a key material in aerospace, automotive, electronics, and electrical applications. For instance, in aerospace, it's used for interior parts, exterior structures, and even engine components. In the automotive industry, you’ll often find it in high-performance brake pads, bearings, and gears.
When it comes to insulation, Vespel SP-1 parts also does a great job. Even under high temperature, high frequency, or high voltage conditions, it keeps its electrical insulation properties stable.
Its radiation resistance is excellent too. This comes down to the aromatic heterocyclic imide composite structure inside the material, which works kind of like an "electron trap." On top of that, hydrogen bonding networks and π-π stacking structures help dissipate energy and prevent local hot spots. At the same time, conjugated systems and steric hindrance effects can absorb radiation energy.
DuPont™ Vespel® SP-1 parts is also highly corrosion resistant, thanks to the imide ring structure in its molecular chain. This structure is chemically stable, so the surface doesn’t easily react. It holds up well against acids, bases, and organic solvents, and its water absorption is usually under 1%. Some grades can stay stable in dilute acid, but overall, it’s not very hydrolysis resistant—especially in alkaline environments.
The rigid structure of aromatic heterocyclic imide bonds gives the material high hardness—around Rockwell R120-130—while the low surface energy (about 40 mN/m) reduces the friction contact area. Inside, a hydrogen bonding network (with a density of 3.5 × 10²¹/cm³) helps restrict sliding between molecular chains and delays the micro-cracking that happens during wear. Such a high hydrogen bond density also slows down the formation of micro-cracks and abrasive debris.
As for flame retardancy, once Vespel SP-1 machined parts catches fire, its aromatic ring structure tends to char first, forming a continuous insulating layer that blocks flammable gases from escaping. At the same time, it releases inert gases like carbon dioxide and nitrogen into the air, which dilutes the oxygen concentration and helps slow down the flame.
